After a night out in Newcastle Graham may have thought his Celebs' heads may be a
little fuzzy so he devised some simple training games - simple for who though?
Once physio Anna had taken the 21 celebrities through some warm-up exercises the
Coach's efforts to turn his squad into a focused side began in earnest with some
mind work.
Graham's motivational qualities are well known but if any of the celebrities were
unfamiliar with his approach they soon found out as the former England boss and
assistant Luther put the players through their paces in six-a-side two-touch games
that tested the Celebs' skills.
"Quality game boys, quality!" enthused Luther as he and Graham barked instructions
from the byline urging the players to work harder and harder.
"We could have more possession than the Legends and lose but what use is that?
Graham questioned the players afterwards. "You want to be a purist you be a
purist, but I want to be a winner!"
The goals were then placed back to back and three teams were spread over the
pitches with instructions to defend, pass and shoot following complicated
instructions from Graham. If there were any cobwebs from last night still
lingering in the celebrities' minds, they were soon blown away. A swim in the
North Sea may have felt like hard work yesterday, but this was something
altogether new.
"It's straightforward," Graham insisted to a perplexed looking audience, "It might
sound a bit odd but there's a purpose behind everything we do. The purpose is to
create a winning side for Sunday!"
The Celebs finally caught the hang of it and began playing as small units after
which Graham gave another pep talk.
"We've got be a passing side to win, we've got to be a defending, pressurising
side and we've got to be a shooting side and know where those shooting
opportunities will come for us," the Coach said.
"Yesterday we worked, physically, but we're working now, boys - mentally," Graham
added. "You've got to put on a performance, that's your job. I will push you, I
will demand of you. You will get knocks, but you will have to deal with them." The
hard work has begun.
