St James Park News

On a visit to St James' Park, some of the Celebrities insisted they won't be intimidated by the capacity crowd.
"Unbelievable," was how Anthony Hutton described it when he walked out on the St. James' pitch for the first time.

"Look at the size of that!" exclaimed Ralf Little as he looked up at the 52,000 seats, knowing that on Sunday night they'd be filled with the country's most passionate fans, watching him and his team-mates take on the Legends.

Skipper Jonathan Wilkes had a look at the spot where he scored from last year and was brimming with confidence about this year's clash. "This is the year," he said. "This is the match. Last year was good, but we lost. This year we're going to win."

Another veteran of last year's game, Ben Shephard tried to tell newcomers David Jones and Danny Young what it would be like on Sunday. He told them about the intimidating noise and the atmosphere, but said, "When you get your first tackle in, you calm down. Then it's just a game you're desperate to win."

Shephard also told them they should enjoy the experience, but Young had other ideas. "It's not about enjoying it, it's about winning. I'm not coming here to lose."

And the youngest member of the squad showed no fear of his opponents either. "I don't think it's important who we're playing. We've got to get out there and give them a hiding," he said.

Jonathan Wilkes was asked to recreate his equalising goal of last year, which prompted questions over whether he intended it or not. Was it a shot or a cross?

"It was a cross," declared Dane Bowers, to his captain's disgust. Wilkes claimed he was too accurate to have scored accidentally.

Ben Shephard was one of the few to agree with the skipper, claiming he would never have crossed from that position.

Wilkes then lined up to show everyone it was no accident. Check whether he did or not on our broadband player clip.
