Matt le Tissier, Ian Rush, Peter Reid and manager Sir Bobby Robson joked alongside Phil Tufnell, Jonathan Wilkes, Anthony Hutton and coach Graham Taylor but also kept their minds firmly on the job ahead.

Former Liverpool and Wales striker Ian Rush insisted that the former professionals were taking the game very seriously and said, “We play to win.

“We’re expected to win,” he added, “We’ve seen the celebrities train and we know they’ll be fit, so we have to use our experience to get through the game. As long as we score one more than them we’ll be happy.”

Graham said preparations were going fine, but he was worried about one of his defenders.

“Tommy Craig has missed the past two days with a very high temperature, so we’re concerned whether or not Tommy will be fit enough to make the game. I very much hope so because he played very well alongside Alec Stewart last year.”

Graham added he will be absolutely certain about his squad once the benching takes place tonight and he loses his final player.

“Bobby Robson lost 10 players last night,” joked Peter Reid referring to the Legends’ night out.

When Peter Reid was asked what sort of reaction he could expect from the Newcastle crowd, the former Sunderland boss said, “ Monkey’s heeed!”

“To be honest I’ve always had a decent relationship. It’s a fantastic stadium to play in and I’m looking forward to it. I don’t usually lose there either.”

Anthony’s comment that he would love to put in a hard tackle on Matt le Tissier came back to haunt him. The Big Brother star quickly backtracked, saying: “Obviously I was just saying that for the craic!”

“Bring it on!” Matt replied.

Phil Tufnell was confident he had made the transition from cricket to football seamlessly, the former England player agreeing that fielding practice was now helping him on the football pitch.

“I used to drop the cricket ball and I’m still dropping the football,” he joked.

Just what the legends will be hoping, Phil.
