Bobby Robson News

After training it was time for the Legends to indulge another pastime - mickey-taking on the golf course.
The Legends played a few holes of golf together and confirmed just how seriously they are taking the challenge of the Celebs.

Matt Le Tissier was certain there would be no complacency come 8pm on Sunday when The Match returns to St James' Park. He said there was no chance of the Celebs being taken lightly, nor of the Legends not being motivated enough to beat them.

The former England and Southampton hero said he would be much fitter than last year, when the Legends narrowly beat the Celebs with a late goal. He has been in training for some time and will be ready. "It was too close last year," he said. "They surprised us."

Le Tiss's goals were so memorable, one wag Legend called out as he approached the tee, "Mind he doesn't flick it up and volley it."

Dean Saunders struggled to explain why footballers are so into golf, saying "It keeps us out of trouble." But it was clear that playing golf together is partly an exercise in footballers taking the mickey out of each other.

'Deano' told Peter Shilton they'd be charging £25 for a sliced shot and Shilts hoped that didn't apply to goal kicks.

When Sir Bobby Robson sliced his tee shot, Ian Rush couldn't keep a straight face as he said, "That was unlucky, boss."

Graeme Souness had joined the Legends on the course and though he admitted he's not a golfer, it didn't stop ribbing his partners when they played poor shots. "Does your wife play?" he chuckled.

While the banter was constant, the Legends are determined that they will be the ones laughing on Sunday night.
