Sir Bobby Robson exclusively gave The Match website his thoughts on some of his Legends.
|
Sir Bobby Robson is looking forward to returning to his beloved St James's Park and believes The Match couldn't happen anywhere else.
On hearing the stadium had sold out, he said, "You would not get it at Arsenal or Chelsea, only Newcastle. You have come to the right place."
Sir Bobby is also looking forward to working with some great players and went through the strengths of his squad.
Neville Southall
"He has been a wonderful goalkeeper, exceptionally consistent, hardly made a mistake, anything that went past him was a terrific shot. He's a great asset to us. He always looked quite large in goal."
Des Walker
"He played under me when I was the England manager. Very quick, very perceptive, anticipating danger. He's just a defender, nothing else. He didn't do clever things with the ball. He was a simple distributor of the ball out of defence. Difficult to get past, he's got some pace. Darren Campbell is an Olympic sprinter but in Des Walker we hope we can put a brake on him.
Gary McAllister
Gary is a great midfield player. Creative, perceptive in passing, one who can deliver precisely where you want it.
John Barnes
Overweight, but still a very talented player. A genuine wide player; an out side left with a dextrous left foot. He could swing it in and curl it out and expose the goalkeeper. He could pin point the cross as well. Good dribbler, final ball - excellent. Better in the air on the back post than a lot of people might expect. So he's a fabulous player, John Barnes.
Ian Rush
Ian Rush has been a great player all his career. Quick over the ground, difficult to mark, once he got away he was difficult to catch. He left you for dead. And in front of goal he stroked it in, passed it in, blasted it in. He had every little kind of shot that you need. He's a top striker.
David Batty
His best assets were the recovery of the ball and sometimes people forget about that. If you've got guys in the team who can win the ball back like Batty, you've got an extra weapon in your armoury. He won tackles - never lost. That for me was always a shining part of his game.
