BIOGRAPHY
Already a legend in his native Belgium, Philippe was brought to Newcastle by Kevin Keegan from Anderlecht as he tried to build a championship-winning side at St James' Park. A great ball-playing centre-half, Philippe typified the Magpies attacking nature, often lending his skills to the attack. He famously completed a memorable rout of Manchester United with a delicate lob that would be beyond most centre-halves.
Although a classy defender with skills to play anywhere on the park, he was also a whole-hearted player who gave his all to the cause. One of Newcastle's most popular signings, the Geordies would sing "Philippe, Philippe Albert, everyone knows his name".
