BIOGRAPHY
Always comfortable on the ball, Mark Wright was a natural leader who caught the eye at both Southampton and Derby County. A stylish defender Wright was central to Sir Bobby Robson’s three-man defence at the 1990 World Cup, scoring the only goal in England’s group stage win over Egypt and was one of their outstanding performers.
A year later he signed for Liverpool and soon took over as captain. He led the team to their FA Cup triumph in 1992. Wright bravely battled back from injury to reclaim his place and lead Liverpool again, before his 1998 departure.
