BIOGRAPHY
David Batty was a fearless midfielder who protected his defence and added steel to the midfield. He did it so well for Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers that he won the League title with both clubs. Tidy and unfussy, he avoided the spotlight that shone on his more illustrious team-mates, yet was the heartbeat of both title-winning sides.
Batty was an England regular for most of the 90s, representing his country at the 1998 World Cup. Sadly, despite some strong performances, he will be remembered for his fateful penalty miss against Argentina as England crashed out.
