Long Way Round may have finished for Sky One viewers, but with the release of a DVD and CD the memory of the trip lives on…Charley Boorman reflects with us on his journey of a lifetime…
Before you left for your trip you said the following scared you most: coming off the bike, camping, the dark, China, Road of Bones and extreme river crossings. Which proved to be the scariest? All of them except China as we did not visit there in the end. However none of them turned out to be as bad as I first thought they would be. I ended up really enjoying the camping in the end. What was the lowest part of your journey and did you ever contemplate coming home? The lowest and best part of the journey was going through Mongolia. It was physically and mentally challenging but the people we met on the way helped us to see what an incredible country it really is. How often did you get to speak to your friends and family on the trip? I spoke to my wife and children almost every day. I also spoke to friends occasionally who were all a great help during the difficult times. Did your wives approve of the trip? Yes, our wives fully supported us and were a great support throughout the great adventure. Do you think you could you have done the trip alone? No Has your friendship entered a new level because of the trip? Yes, after a trip like this you share something between you, a bond that you keep between you forever. We were very lucky to end up even better friends than when we started. Did you discover any new strengths or weaknesses in both Ewan and yourself? Yes, of course you learn lots about each other and yourself which is part of the kind of trip we did. Did Ewan have any bad habits that drove you crazy during the trip? Snoring, which apparently I did as well! Which country visited on the trip would you most like to return to? Mongolia and Siberia because they were both so far away from anything Western and the most difficult to travel in. Who is your motorbiking hero? Barry Sheen and Valentino Rossi. When you came to auction the bikes for charity, was it difficult to let them go? It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be but there was a definite sense of sadness as the hammer went down. Are there any plans for another trip in the pipeline? Yes. Ewan and I would love to do something together again. We are just not sure when. I will hopefully be doing the Paris Dakar in 2006 on my own. What are your plans for Christmas? To spend it with my family and New Year in Scotland. Finally, will you be giving the book or CD to anyone for Christmas?! The DVD may go in as a stocking filler or two - for some friends.
