#12: "Kobol's Last Gleaming: Part II"

We continue from the last episode with Colonial Raptors battling Cylon Raiders as they plummet toward the planet Kobol. Tyrol, Crashdown, and their ground crew swarm to save people from a burning Raptor. Dr. Baltar is aboard the Raptor and seems doomed until Number Six guides him out of the flames. He is saved and grateful, but already it's clear that Number Six is guiding him to something bigger. She seems to be guiding him to his destiny…

On Galactica, Gaeta shares his work on the Cylon transponders to Adama and Tigh. The transponder devices identify themselves to each other. This is great news for the fleet as they can use a device to fool the Cylons and nuke their base ship. Adama tells Laura that Kara is working on a plan to use the Cylon Raider to accomplish this goal. Laura expresses concern over using the Raider as she wanted to use it herself. Adama firmly reminds her -- that's not going to happen.

Laura works quickly now. She talks to Billy about her belief in the prophecies, but Billy reminds her that she's embracing a "drug-induced vision of prophecy." Ouch. Laura moves on to Lee. She conveys her belief that the scriptures have led them to Kobol, and will lead them to Earth. Lee listens, but he won't budge. He will follow his father's command. Laura's next target is Kara, someone whom she knows will respond to scriptural quotation. At first, Kara thinks Laura's plan to go to Caprica is lunacy and she balks at the idea. So Laura plays rough. She informs Kara that Adama doesn't really know the way to Earth. Just ask him.

Aboard the Cylon Raider for an autopilot test, Kara does just that. She contacts Adama and learns that he lied to her -- and to everyone else. Adama warns her to watch what she is doing, but it's too late. Her mind is made up. In an instant, Kara Thrace Jumps the Raider away. Adama knows she's heading to Caprica.

Adama also knows that Laura put Kara up to this act of treachery. Laura confesses quickly that it was she who conspired with Kara, but she maintains that she only wants to protect the fleet and ensure the future of the human race. Adama feels betrayed by his president and he asks her to resign. Laura refuses. The conflict between the military and the executive branch grows to a fever pitch. Adama has no choice but to send a strike team to infiltrate Colonial One. Lee and Tigh are among the officers to cut their way onto the president's ship.

Adama still has the problem of the Cylons over Kobol and he needs a pilot to fly a Raptor equipped with a Cylon transponder to the base ship. In sickbay, he recruits Sharon, still bandaged from her gunshot wound. Sharon eagerly complies. She and pilot Racetrack board a Raptor and head out to nuke the Cylon ship. The transponder works. They move into the base ship's interior and Sharon exits the Raptor to plant the bomb. What she sees next blows her mind. Twenty models of "Sharon" appear and speak to her in loving, encouraging tones. Our Sharon is devastated. I'm not a Cylon. But how can she deny it now? Confused and frightened, Sharon re-boards her Raptor and she and Racetrack escape as the base ship explodes. Mission accomplished.

Kara has an equally easy time fooling the Cylon presence on Caprica. She lands the Raider and explores the Delphi Museum. But just as she finds the arrow of Apollo, the trouble begins. Number Six appears and she and Kara engage in a violent fight to the death. Kara finally gets the upper hand and Six is killed. Kara brushes herself off and sees a familiar face. It's Helo. He's alive on Caprica and thrilled to see Starbuck. Then, Kara sees another familiar face which does not belong on Caprica. Sharon Valerii. This is one "Sharon" too many. Kara knows instantly that the woman she trusted is an enemy Cylon. Kara reels and tries to kill Sharon but Helo stands in the way. "You can't! She's pregnant!"

On Colonial One, the stand-off ensues. Laura and her forces are on one side, and Colonial officers including Lee and Tigh are on the other. Then, Lee takes a new turn. He points his weapon at Tigh and announces that no matter what the president has done, the fleet cannot abandon democracy. It's Laura who ends the stand-off when she orders Lee to lower his weapon. Tigh puts Laura in the brig, and he puts Lee in handcuffs and returns him to Galactica.

On Kobol, Number Six continues to lead Baltar into a magical realm. She brings him into an opera house where he hears music. Six reveals their purpose for being there when she shows him a cradle and announces that he will be the protector of the next generation of god's children. Baltar can barely speak.

The long day ends on Galactica, where a handcuffed Lee exchanges glances with his disappointed father, Adama. The moment lifts when Sharon appears, a victor in her mission to destroy the Cylon base ship. Adama praises Sharon for a job well done. No one can imagine what's coming next. As Adama reaches out to shake Sharon's hand, Sharon pulls her weapon and shoots Adama twice. He flies back, wounded in the chest and abdomen. Lee rushes to his father's side.

As shocked officers restrain Sharon, we fade out.
