Trigger Happy TV legend Dom Joly returns to Sky One this November, setting off on a journey of discovery across the world as he looks to get to grips with the habits, rituals and values of different cultures and examines their attitude to Homer Simpson’s proclaimed "cause of and solution to all of life’s problems" – alcohol.
Having spent the last few decades painstakingly gathering the necessary experience for this study, Dom, along with travel companion Pete, seeks to find what sets different nations apart, analysing alcohol’s relationship with everything from religion to law and order.
Moving through the US, Dom and Pete try to unravel and understand the contradictions of a nation, proud of its civil liberties, where 16 year-olds can drive, 18 year-olds can buy firearms but only those over 21, the highest minimum age in the world, can drink alcohol.
Germany, home of the Munich Beer Festival, is a nation of beer lovers and a proud producer of strong beer. During this year's World Cup hundreds of thousands of people from around the world flooded into the nation without tickets to any games, but intent on soaking up the atmosphere and the alcohol.
Then there’s Russia, where the relationship with vodka is well documented, highlighted earlier this year by the nation’s outcry at the sudden shortages of their favourite spirit, sparking fears of riots when production came to a standstill.
Other lucky nations on Dom’s itinerary include India, Australia, Belgium and Mexico.
Hanging out with the locals, observing their rituals and indulging in the occasional drink, purely for research purposes of course, Dom Joly will bravely attempt to combine alcohol with entertainment. It’s a tough job...
