Wednesday PM - The Celebs race together in a Mini 7's mash up
Silverstone was buzzing with excitement this afternoon as the celebrities competed together on the track for the first time. The Girls came into this event on a high after Ms Dynamite’s morning Hovercraft victory over Les. Ingrid showed no signs of nervousness after her Monster Truck wipe out of yesterday, saying she felt “at one with the car and the road”.
Once the race began, it became clear it was Brian’s to win as he took an early unassailable lead. Gary began strongly, but soon spun off on the difficult greasy surface, then alarmingly rolled back on to the track. Jenny and Melissa did well to avoid him. Soon after on Lap 2 Tamara skidded off, finding herself stuck in the dirt trap and out of the race. Nigel, driving in typical aggressive fashion, spun out twice.
The fiercest battle was for 2nd place between Melissa, Jenny, and Nick. Jenny managed to keep ahead of Nick for the majority of the race, because she was, according to Team Captain DC (watching from Race Control), keeping to the correct racing line whilst the Lock Stock actor was driving erratically and on the edge. Sadly for the ex Atomic Kitten, Nick managed to sneak past when she was held up by back marker Ingrid. An even bigger disappointment awaited Melissa. On the final corner of the last lap, looking a guaranteed 2nd, her engine blew, opening the door for Nick to take the runner’s up spot behind Brian, but ahead of Jenny, closely followed home by Gary, Nigel and Ingrid.
Eddie was uncharacteristically diplomatic in victory, conceding that Melissa and Jenny had driven the better, more disciplined race and deserved to be 2nd and 3rd. “The Race is now on,” he added. “I’m glad. It was getting a bit embarrassing”.
The day belonged to Brian though, who drove a perfect race and who is emerging as the week’s dark horse despite earlier insisting that he was “too old for all of this”. According to Jenny, “Brian’s the one we have to look out for on Sunday”.
