Finding A Suitable Hypnotherapist
By Paul McKenna

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that you will find someone suitable or even ethical as a hypnotherapist.

The reason for this is because there is no official hypnotherapy body or register and no government recognised credentials in hypnotherapy. Many people have set themselves up as associations, federations, clinical bodies etc. However all of them are self-recognising trade organisations who give credentials they have originated themselves. Whilst some of them are well intentioned, others, in my opinion, are unscrupulous.

If you are looking for a therapist who practices Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), whilst there are no guarantees, I suggest you visit someone who is a member of The Society of NLP and has been trained personally by Dr Richard Bandler, the creator of the field.

If you are looking for a therapist who practices Thought Field Therapy (TFT), whilst there are no guarantees, I would recommend that you visit someone who has been trained personally by Dr Roger Callahan, the creator of the field.

Sensible Steps

There are several things you can do to improve your chances of finding someone suitable.

  1. Ask your GP to recommend someone, or ask a friend if they have been personally helped by someone and were happy with the standard.
  2. Talk to the hypnotherapist before undergoing any treatment. Some hypnotherapists will even do an initial free consultation. You might need to talk to several before you find one you feel most comfortable with.
  3. Check you are getting results and if you’re not then stop. For example, I would expect most phobias to be cured in one or two sessions.
I hope this is helpful to you in your desire to improve your life.

Best wishes,
